Co-financed industrial PhD scholarship from DDA

HØRSHOLM, Denmark – March 6, 2020

Congratulations to Gubra and PhD student Mathias Bonde Møllerhøj (MSc). We just received a co-financed industrial PhD scholarship from the Danish Diabetes Academy for Mathias’ research project “Identification and validation of fibrosis targets in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis”.

In collaboration with clinical expert Professor Lise Lotte Gluud at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Hvidovre Hospital, Mathias will investigate gene profiles from hundreds of clinical and preclinical liver samples. The project will give us a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of fibrosis in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and identify and validate new drug candidates for the treatment of NASH.

Worldwide, an increase of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is observed and it is estimated that approx. 25% of the population in the western world has fatty liver. NAFLD is a complex spectrum of liver diseases ranging from benign hepatic steatosis to the more aggressive necroinflammatory manifestation, NASH. NASH can lead to cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and hepatic failure. Currently, liver transplantation is the only option for NASH cirrhosis. There are no approved drugs to treat NASH yet.
