Hem Skov
310 hectares south of Mariager Fjord
Gubra Green has acquired Hem Skov, a 310-hectare woodland in the hilly landscape south of Mariager Fjord in Himmerland, as part of our long-term work with nature restoration. The forest has until now been managed as production forest.
Why this area
Hem Skov is among the most important connected nature areas in Denmark, identified in the University of Copenhagen report Mere, bedre og større natur i Danmark (2024) — one of the 149 areas singled out as potentially decisive for securing Denmark’s biodiversity.
The forest also holds considerable potential in itself, including areas of old, native trees. Our ambition is to support these natural values over time.
What we are doing
This is work measured in decades rather than seasons. Some changes will be visible within a few years; most will take considerably longer. We are planning the work in collaboration with nature and forestry experts, and in dialogue with local and regional stakeholders.
“Hem Skov holds great potential, with existing natural values including areas of old, native trees. A large part of the forest also consists of non-native conifer species, which will gradually be phased out to make room for nature’s own processes and dynamics — among other things through the restoration of natural hydrology and extensive grazing. Together, these measures will create a more varied and open forest landscape for the benefit of biodiversity.”
